Balboa Bay Club – Saturday, June 6, 2020, 7 am – 2 pm
Help Your Harbor, a coalition of Orange County-based environmental groups, announces the 4th Annual Newport Harbor Underwater Clean Up (NHUC) scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach.
Over 300 scuba divers and above-water volunteers are shuttled on electric Duffy Boats to designated sites around the Newport Harbor to collect trash, plastics and other discarded water pollutants in a dedicated effort to keep the 25.2 miles of coastline, bay and harbor waterways pollution free. Last year, volunteers collected over 4,000 pounds of trash and single-use plastics from the Newport Harbor.
Set at the Balboa Bay Club, participating divers and other volunteers are provided with a hosted breakfast and lunch, post-event party with a live band, raffle drawings, and awards for the most unusual items. Some of the most interesting past finds include a holstered pistol, shopping carts, car engines, purses containing ID, cash and credit cards, Christmas trees and decorations, and an unopened champagne bottle with two flutes dubbed “the engagement gone wrong.” Of course, LOTS of single-use plastic items were collected, much of them being bottles and fishing line which is very hazardous to marine life.
Returning NHUC partners represent all corners of Orange County including: Balboa Bay Club, Duffy Electric Boats, Beach Cities Scuba Centers, Surfrider Newport Beach Chapter, Newport-Irvine Rotary Club, and Firebrand Media with more to be announced soon.
There will be a celebration following the cleanup to recognize and appreciate all those who made the Newport Harbor Underwater Clean Up possible. Live music and lunch will be provided, and there will be many environmental and conservation organizations onsite to interact with the community and raise awareness.
Registration for the 2020 Newport Harbor Underwater Clean Up will open in April.
